NSW Mill Creek Conservation Park (Menai) - MTB Trail building Thread

The 3 way near Matt's Roll of death is opening up too much and the climb out / descent is eroding substantially.
So what Kev and I discussed was closing down the climb, and making people keep following the trail to the firetrail and climb up that way. Similarly, if we want to keep Matt's Roll ... we will keep people up on the rock ledge for longer and either roll in from higher up (pretty scary rollin) ... or drop into the start from a different angle, but still hop over the tree. (Kev suggested we either lop the tree branch or build a better more permanent bridge)

In short, we have to close the current (up / down section) and make that one way (down) if we still want to keep Matt's Roll in ... or we scrap it all together.

Sorry that was hard to describe. Best I show you if you have questions or concerns
I didn't get this at all when I first read it. But now it's clicked!

That climb doesn't work well anyway. It'd be great to keep the roll of death though, it's great fun but I hate that tree! A permanent bridge or getting rid of the tree would be good.
I had a look at it a while ago, I think there's scope (if we got rid of the tree) to make it a double drop. First down from the top shelf, you'd need to build a lander, then into the straight run down roll of death. It'd be worth figuring out how we flow on from the roll though, at the moment you come off it and then stop which is fun but not anything more than a feature.

Also there seems to be another up/down that's opened up slightly further back, may be worth investigating making that sustainable or closing it down.

Western Side of Mill Creek is now open. Council will be building a fence at some stage between the Gun Club and the Conservation Zone ... but all good to recommence riding the sections we built.

Note: the plans were to redirect stray bullets or that part of the track given the archaeological stuff Kevin found and improve flow. So don't get too attached to stray bullets.

Next Build day is slated for the 13th June 2015. Same time same place (7.45am @ the gate on Little Forest rd) be good to get some hands to help as we have a couple of redirections to put in to expand trail length and improve flow

i) The section under the Big Berm heading to the Creek Trail ... will traverse a little further along and then turn and reconnect with the start of Creek Trail.
ii) Close off the climb/descent near Matt's Roll
iii) Potentially get over to the other side and do some track clearing and potentially start the redirection away from stray bullets ??? not 10 on this yet.

We need you regulars back in force please ... new diggers also welcome.

Ideally it should go from the roller into a nice right hander catch berm/corner and carry speed to he next section.

road the new section we cut in last week a couple of times today.....
the first section is a winner.... the last bit needs a rethink ,granted it was
a bit soft, which made it hard to carry speed through ,but needs less corners
or wider corners,
anyone else ridden it who has a opinion ?

Ditto...less corners is my cents worth

Rode here for the first time today and liked it . It seems to flow well but we had trouble trying to figure out which way to go ( i know you guys are still building ). We did ride one section though that raised an eyebrow . Its the one we found out runs along the fence of the gun club . I only say one sign halfway down that said track closed ? After talking to someone they said it must be as a disclaimer that you ride that section at your own peril . Is that the case ?
What we did ride was good , well done on using the natural terrain with the constructed trail .

Hey mate glad you liked the trails we have out there, the track that runs along the fence
Is called "stray bullets" for obvious reasons, it's just been reopened after the council closed it
when some knob, from the gun club decided to move their boundary without consulting anyone
So that sign was just a left over from then, did you work out which way to go in the end. ...
What bike were you riding? as I was out there myself

I was on a Merida 96 with my peace symbol jersey on and my mate on a Specialised Epic . Yeah we ended up changing our loops and then went exploring some fire trails to see if we could find some other trails before heading back and doing another loop . Sweeping corners are good , some trail builders seem to build them too sharp so you`re always having to work for it . There was one confusing section that I think we rode the wrong way up a steep rock section , there were some people waiting up top and one guy did say it was the wrong way , then the trail turned sharp left back onto single track across a fire road ?

I also went to check it out yesterday. I always get lost once I cross the creek then climb the switchbacks to the top of the hill up near Heathcote road the trail sends you around in circles, but eventually I find the one that hugs the fence of the gun club.

Overall there has been some fantastic work done on the trails but I feel there are too many options, a long continuous singletrack loop should be the priority before endless multiple lines are built. Just my 2 cents, keep up the good work.
