Wheel Build Advice Thread

Erase hubs

Never heard of them but pricing looks pretty good.

I'm a bit conservative on hubs, went from 100% Hope to 100% DT as I like to interchange bits when I needed without a $200 propriety spare laying in a drawer.

Though could sway for some silent Onxy next time I build a nice wheelset for something special.

Yama hubs are just rebranded Erase if you want to try and source local. (Same guy who is behind Raild and TheBrig here in Sydney)

I’ve had the Yama hubs (Erase) for over a year now and no complaints (not that there should be). My only hub recommendation is avoid I9 as have seen way too many broken bits in those for the outrageous cost.

Cheets @The Duckmeister will Google fu.

@northvanguy - thanks. Pricing is great as well. One Up usually have a decent discount for Black Friday sales but like the idea of the Ti free hub.

Been on Hope hubs forever (currently Pro 4) so looking to try something new. Nextie prices for premium rims have jumped a but still cheaper than a branded rim eg WAO or Reserve.

Planning new wheelset, hopefully this year but likely in the new year depending on funds. Will go with One Up or Erase hubs and Chinese carbon rims. What’s the go to for rims now? Still LB or Nextie or is there other options to consider now?
Recently bought a (another) pair of Nexties. Two different rims, an asymmetric 29er and symmetric 27.5. Haven't built them up yet, but the quality still appears to be top notch. There was a delay of a couple of weeks due to them being out of stock after ordering, but shipping was heaps fast once sent (just regular China EMS too). Between the battering I've given my previous set(s) and the build quality, I just can't be arsed chancing something else.

Thanks Dr @beeb I know @ozzybmx has got on well with Nextie as well. Likely go down that route when the time comes but always good to explore options.

Wheel building is calming they said.

The thought of how many times you'll recheck the spoke calculator has me mentally exhausted already ;)
I’ve done it once and not sure I could go through it again. The actual wheel building is awesome, but farking spoke calculations…

Another reason to build DT Swiss hubs to DT Swiss spokes.
Just whisper the ERD and... Voila 🪄💥🛞

The German waiting game is painful when you are reordering spokes.

Yeah, mine was a cheap build with Novatec hubs and it was impossible to find the info I need and ended up having to wait for the hubs to measure, then order and wait for the spokes etc. Surprised it all worked out in the end.

I got caught out by this the first time and ended up with spokes too long.

All my Sapim spokes come from customcutspokes in the UK now. 2 weeks via royal mail.

The hubs and spokes are 100%, having the correct ERD measured by you is the ticket.

I think I've mentioned this before I have a Hozan spoke threader in my toy/tool collection. I'm happy to pay it forward and shorten any burners measurement f/ups if you get them to me and back. Unfortunately lengthening is beyond my skills and available tools.

Bit late to the party with this but another vote for Nextie rims, insane vfm considering the quality.
I'll add my vote to that based on experience with Nextie Premium NXT29XML38. I did have one rim break/crack with method of failure being delamination of the rim wall, but customer service was excellent and they were quick to send me a new rim after providing picture of the failure and determining that it was a manufacturing fault.

Built up to DT240 hubs with brass nipples and DT Comp spokes, and since replacing above faulty rim, they've been bomb proof and have survived more abuse than a 1600g wheelset should probably be expected to.
